Via Flaminia Corse, Ozewiezewozewiezewallakristallix
The 17th edition of the Via Flaminia is subtitled “Ozewiezewozewiezewallakristallix”, because we imagine ourselves as a Corsican this warlord for a week and are going to relive the adventures of Asterix and Obelix. Not fleeing by foot from the Romans, but driving comfortably in our classics on winding roads with beautiful views. Looking for delicious dishes with local wines in the company of the other participants.
We spend the night in a variety of hotels, usually on the coast but also in the mountains. And even have an afternoon off. Each hotel has a swimming pool, so drive the route right in one go. Then you will enjoy it longer.
If desired, we can arrange the transport of your car from the Netherlands to Pisa airport. From there it is a half hour drive to our first hotel, Grand Hotel Palazzo in Livorno. Its grand, but also very stylish.
You will experience the great advantage of this hotel the next day, as it is only a ten minute drive to the ferry. And every minute counts if you have to check in no later than 6.30 am! You can take breakfast and lunch on the four and a half hour crossing to Bastia.
Arriving in Corsica, we drive along a spectacular coastal road to the Hostellerie de l’Abbaye. A former monastery in Calvi. Here we spend two nights. The next day we drive through olive groves and head into the mountains for our first pass.
On Tuesday we drive through Corsica’s highest mountain pass on the famous D84. It is quite an experience. Don’t forget to look at the villages that seem to be glued to the mountain. We arrive in a charming hotel located in the middle of the mountains in the Parc Naturel of Haute Corse.
We continue our way to a vineyard in Aléria. There we enjoy a tour with accompanying tasting and lunch. In the afternoon there is an easy road to Port Vecchio, once a haven for pirates. Haven’t Asterix and Obelix been here too?
Here the group is divided into two hotels, where we comfortably stay two nights. They are only a 2-minute walk from each other. And upon arrival we have dinner together in one of the hotels.
Thursday morning we tour the coastal area. Our tour ends in Bonifacio which is conspicuously built on a rock and offers numerous restaurants on the art side. Here we leave you free for the rest of the day. Would you like to discover Bonifacio, enjoy the hotel or visit Porto Vecchio? Perhaps the three of them.
And already it is the last rally day. We move from the East to the West coast. We start in the mountains and drive past authentic Corsican villages, before lowering our way to the sea. That is where we enjoy lunch. Thereafter we take our last leg through the lowlands on to the capital Ajaccio.
As always, the Via Flaminia is a relaxed rally where the competition serves the atmosphere, winning is not a goal in itself. There is enough time for a cup of coffee or a photo. No time limit. Classification is done by navigation and the competition for last place sometimes is fierce. There is a Sport class for the more competitive participants.
There are 28 available entry positions for cars up to 1980.
For teams with a combined age under 100, there is a 1% discount for each year below 100, with a maximum of 20% (reference year 2022). They may also bring a younger car, one year for every two years their combined age is less than 100 years.
The rally is all inclusive and includes breakfast, most lunches and dinner, wine and soft drinks. An exception is one of the dinners in Calvi where you can go out on yourself and for your own expense. For practical reasons, meals on the ferries are at your own expense as well.
The ferry crossing is included in the price, as well as technical assistance during the whole rally.
Of course we hope that after all vaccinations, Covid will no longer play a role in 2022. But the virus has surprised us before. If we have to cancel the rally due to these kinds of circumstances, we will refund your entry fee minus the costs already incurred. You will find further details on the registration form.
If you have chosen to have your car transported, it will be delivered at the Grand Hotel. You will be picked up at the airport.
We will welcome you with a drink. There is an opportunity to get to know the other participants. And chances are high that you will encounter some familiar faces.

We get up before dawn to be on time for the ferry. It departs at 8:00 am and the last check-in is at 6:30 am. Fortunately, it is only a 10-minute drive and to save even more time you can have breakfast on board.
We arrive in Corsica at 12.30 pm. From the port of Bastia we quickly find ourselves into the hills and you will be introduced to driving on the ever-winding roads of Corsica. The sports class drives the D80, a road originally built by Napoleon. This is a coastal road that requires 100% attention and in return offers spectacular views. The tour class takes a small part of it. Enjoy to the max.
After passing Saint Florent you will drive on a varied route, through hills and along the sea, to the seaside resort of Calvi.
We arrive at Hostellerie L’Abbaye, where we stay for two nights. As soon as you arrive you feel the magic of the place: the hotel is an old church of the Franciscan monastery, completely renovated over the years. You can enjoy the wellness or take a sporty dip in the pool. In the evening we dine together in the port of Calvi.

From the coast we slowly enter the mountains. The beauty of the view goes hand in hand with the roads becoming narrower. The views are splendid and you will see some buildings from time to time only.
In the morning, the sports class will take the Bocca di Battaglia, a mountain pass with a height of 1,104 meters. The road to the top is beautiful with gradients of up to 12%. So expect a few hairpin bends. The view is phenomenal. With a bit of luck you can even see the French mainland. The tour class skips this pass and does it a bit more relaxed.
Lunch is typically French and therefore tasty. After this first encounter with Corsican mountains we approach the coast again and drive along the olive groves as we approach our hotel.
Dinner is on your own tonight. You find restaurants within walking distance in the picturesque Calvi town, the birthplace of Columbus. First enjoy a terrace in the harbour or visit the Citadel and it’s Cathedral located in there.
Today we leave in a southerly direction on fairly easy roads. Which does not say they are not winding. Occasionally the views over the sea are magnificent. After a two-hour drive, we head inland on the D84. In Evisa, a picturesque town that seems stuck to the mountain, we enjoy lunch. Then we continue on the road over Col de Vergio, Corsica’s highest pass, 1,473 meters above sea level. It may just happen that you come across wild boars. In short, an exciting road with countless twists and turns.
At the end of the afternoon we arrive at our hotel, which is encompassed only by nature. And it is situated in the mountains. So double enjoyment.

We first take Col di Sorba. During nine kilometer we climb more than 650 meters to 1,311 meters above sea level. Be sure to stop in one of the hamlets for a coffee to recover from the narrow, steep roads. But oh so beautiful. From the top we descend and eventually leave the mountains to end up between the grapes through a more sloping green landscape. Wine has grown here for over 2000 years.

The vineyards of Aléria are spread over gently sloping hills and located between the sea and the mountains at an altitude of more than 2500 meters and the seaside Lake Diana. This unique situation allows the vines to enjoy the tremendous brightness of the Mediterranean sunlight, but still the benefits of cool mountain air, a climatic advantage for picking grapes rich in color and fragrance. It is of unparalleled beauty here. We will tour it but of course also taste it at a winery. And have lunch there.
In the afternoon we drive relatively quickly to our hotel via an almost straight road – unique in Corsica – in order to get there in time for a refreshing dip. The sport class then is still crossing the Col de Bavella. A road with stunning views over the Mediterranean and the Alta Rocca mountains. If you are in the tour class and you want to experience this as well, report it to the organization. And then we take it into account with the processing you rally card.
Today our route is mostly coastal. From Porto Vechio we drive though the Piccovaggia area, located near the coast. You may encounter some dirt roads. Then we go into the hills. Lush is the right word for it. Just before arriving in Bonifacio, we again will tour some roads near the coast.
A challenge has been built in for the sports class. If you do that right in one go, you will be done in half an hour.
The rally part ends in Bonifacio, Corsica’s southernmost tip. Bonifacio is imposingly situated on perpendicular cliffs 80 meters above the sea. And it is called the most curious place in Corsica. A fortified city with uncountable narrow streets with arcades and covered corridors. Bonifacio is a bustling harbour town with an impressive citadel, many restaurants and a great place to wander around. You have the afternoon off and are free to chose the restaurant of your linkig.
Bonifacio, or Portus Syracusanus, as the Romans call it is an ideal place to buy your Asterix and Obelix clothing for the closing dinner.
From Bonifacio it is a 30 km drive back to the hotel.

Today will be beautiful again. We drive through the Cagna massif from the East to the Westcoast. First we go back into the mountains. Half an hour from Porto-Vecchio we pass Ospedale (U Spidali), the first mountain village at 900 meters above sea level. It is named after the former hospital in the area. Today there is a reservoir. We drive on and pass through villages glued to the mountain. Feel free to stop for a snack. Or enjoy spectacular views of the Gulf.We continue on narrow roads and over green plateaus. To finally find better roads which will lead us in time for lunch by the sea.
We remain more or less at sea level in the afternoon. No more mountains. The view is a bit more arid and dry. The end of the rally is approaching. It is already the last stage. We drive through the capital Ajaccio to our hotel Cala di Sole, nicely located by the sea.

The rally ends after breakfast. It is your choice to stay longer on the island or to take a ferry back to Italy or to France. Sweet memoriesof Corsica’s winding roads and experiences with newly made friends will linger on.
